Investigators Gathering More Information
Rescue teams were alerted to an accident with injuries. That is where two people died after a driver of a stolen vehicle struck their vehicle head-on. The vehicle was stolen from Longport. Video from the area showed the stolen vehicle crossing the line on Route 50 near Second Street in Hamilton Township at about 7:30 am on Saturday.
Police reported that there were four people in the stolen vehicle. Three of them were under the age of 18. The fourth was 18 years old. Police charged all four with conspiracy to commit second-degree aggravated assault, conspiracy to commit third-degree joyriding, conspiracy to commit second-degree eluding, and conspiracy to commit second-degree theft by receiving a stolen motor vehicle. The 18-year-old was also charged with first-degree employing a juvenile in the commission of a crime.
Police are still investigating the crash. There is some indication that a police pursuit may have occurred just prior to the crash. No official determination if an active pursuit was underway was available initially. The Attorney General's Office of Public Integrity and Accountability is fully investigating those reports.
