A Devastating, Preventable Accident
The accident happened at the intersection of Walnut Street and 48th at around 4 am. The damage to the Malibu was so severe that responders could not initially access the driver. The entire accident was caught on traffic cameras, which clearly showed the Durango going through the intersection on a steady red light.
The accident generated so much force that it launched the Malibu into two parked cars on Walnut Street, causing trunk damage to one and forcing the other up onto the steps of a nearby home. There were three people in the Durango at the time of the accident, all of whom were taken to area hospitals with minor injuries.
Police also noted that just prior to the accident, calls came in regarding racing vehicles on Walnut Street. Members of the neighborhood report that the area frequently sees crashes as drivers speed through it.
