The Details of the Chase and Crash
Police went to the Buckingham Village Development in Mantua Township after they learned that someone was checking car door handles in the neighborhood. Police drove through the development even as additional calls came in with similar reports.
That is when an officer noticed a Jeep Grand Cherokee on Lestershire Drive. Several people were noted trying to open various cars, and once they saw the police car, they all jumped into the Jeep to flee the scene. The officer tried to stop the driver, but the driver continued driving down the road towards Willingboro.
Other officers were dispatched and found other stolen vehicles, including a Kia and a black sedan. Both drivers of those cars also tried to flee the officers. The police officer following a Kia reported that the vehicle turned onto Mercer Avenue, accelerated, and then jumped the railroad tracks.
The vehicle landed about 150 feet away on its roof. The occupants were able to get out of the vehicle and ran away. One minor was apprehended near West Atlantic Avenue and Grey Fox Circle before being taken to the hospital.
Numerous police departments were involved. Eventually, the police called off the chase due to the danger involved.
