Rescuers were called to the scene of an accident in the Fairmount Park section of Philadelphia after reports of a car plunging into the Schuylkill River near Kelly Drive. Fast-Acting Witnesses Saved Life
According to initial information, the crash took place near Temple University’s boathouse. Witnesses reported seeing a red car enter the river and quickly begin to sink. The driver was trapped within. A bystander jumped into the water.
The bystander, who was filming a documentary at the boathouse and saw the accident, was a member of the national rowing team. After reaching the car, the bystander found the door locked, but she was able to pull the driver out through an open window. Several others helped to support the driver while the car went under. The rowing coach brought a boat out to assist in bringing the driver to safety.
The driver was taken to the hospital. It is unclear their condition. Police were able to bring the vehicle out of the water some time later and were investigating what caused it to go into the water. No initial reports on this were provided.
