Person Said to Be Wielding a Tree Branch
Police say the crash occurred at about 1 am in the 6200 block of Ridge Avenue. According to initial reports, the victim approached the bucket truck and was carrying a large tree branch. The person attempted to open the passenger-side door of the bucket truck. They pulled on the door handle with enough force to break it off.
That is when the truck driver feared they were being carjacked and drove away from the scene. In the process, the driver ran over the pedestrian, who suffered a fatal head injury. Police found the work truck about 10 blocks north of the accident scene and said the driver was cooperating with investigators.
A full investigation is underway. Neighbors reported that the pedestrian was a kind person but was known to struggle with mental health concerns. Police have been to the home more than a dozen times in the previous year, including just a day before the accident. Neighbors had called the police because of the person’s behavior. Police have not filed charges.
