The Details of the Deadly Crash
Police said they found the child had died at the time of the crash, and the child’s mother was hospitalized. The incident involved a private ambulance that was driven by a family member. The incident took place at 5:15 am. That is when an ambulance and another vehicle crashed at the intersection of Torresdale and Harbison avenues.
The private ambulance carrying the victims was headed southbound on Torresdale Avenue. It was moving at a high rate of speed, but did not have its lights or sirens on at the time. The ambulance proceeded through a steady red light at the intersection with Harbison Avenue. That is when a 2010 Honda Accord, traveling through a green light, collided with the ambulance. The force caused the one-month-old child and a passenger, who was later determined to be the mother, to be thrown through the windshield of the ambulance.
Initially, police reported the driver would face DUI and other charges, but police later said no charges had yet been filed. There was significant confusion surrounding the case. Typically, only city ambulances can answer 911 calls; private ambulances cannot, but they can transport patients between facilities.
