It’s well known that cigarettes cause lung disease, but what about vaping? Although marketed as a safer alternative and a good way to kick the habit, studies show that e-cigarettes can cause and exacerbate many of the same conditions as traditional smoking, including COPD.
COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) is a lung disease in which tissue inflammation blocks airflow from the lungs to the rest of the body. One of the major known causes of the disease is smoking cigarettes, followed by long-term exposure to chemical fumes, which is known to inflame the lungs.
There are now many sources that state vaping can cause the disease. A recent study from the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine found that vaping prevents mucus elimination, making toxins inhaled through e-cigarettes even harder to clear. This main feature of COPD is known as “mucociliary dysfunction,” which leads to thickened mucus that gets trapped in your lungs, leaving them vulnerable to disease. Other COPD symptoms found in vapers include lung tissue destruction, inflammation, and respiratory infection. Using e-cigarettes as a person with COPD causes additional chronic inflammation, which can worsen the disease and possibly cause secondary lung disease and heart disease.
Though COPD is rare in underage vapers, years of continuous use can cause COPD and other chronic respiratory issues. This is concerning, as numerous studies have shown that not only are youth one of the largest groups of vape customers, but also that many e-cigarette companies purposefully advertise to youth.
In fact, a recent lawsuit found that the e-cigarette company JUUL intentionally targeted young consumers with their marketing. It states that the company specifically marketed images appealing to young people, advertised products on children’s websites, and shipped products to underage customers who bought them directly from their website.
