Person Struck in Crosswalk in Philadelphia

A person was struck while walking across a crosswalk on Route 13 in Bristol Borough. Police reported the incident happened at the intersection of Route 13 and 2nd Avenue at about 2:35 p.m.

Police were called to the scene of the accident and arrived to find a person had been hit in the southbound lanes on the four-lane roadway. The driver remained at the scene of the accident.

The victim was taken to Jefferson Torresdale Hospital in Philadelphia by the Bucks County Rescue Squad. Initial reports showed that the victim suffered multiple bone fractures and was in the hospital receiving care for injuries.

Pedestrians in the Crosswalk and the Right of Way

A person in a crosswalk has the right of way in nearly all situations. Drivers must stop their vehicle or avoid the pedestrian whenever possible because they have the right of way. There are limitations to this, such as when the pedestrian runs out into the street against the signal, and unexpectedly.

However, drivers are often at fault. Accidents like this happen because drivers are distracted, fatigued, impaired by drugs or alcohol, or simply operating their vehicle recklessly. Poor visibility can be a factor in some accidents. A full investigation into what occurred, using area cameras and data, could help provide clarity on why the victim was struck.
