Details of the Frightening Incident
The investigation is ongoing, but what is known at this time is that a utility truck crashed with a passenger vehicle in the northbound lanes of Route 295 near Exit 22. That caused the truck to overturn just off the highway. Fuel spilled into the Hessian Run Tributary, which runs near the West Deptford High School.
The accident resulted in two people within the truck being submerged in the water. The NJDOT Safety Service Patrol Operator nearby sprang into action to rescue those two people, as did the West Deptford Police and Good Samaritans who stopped. The two people from the truck were taken to a nearby hospital for an exam, but were said to have non-life-threatening injuries.
Gloucester County Hazmat crews, along with the West Deptford Fire and Westville Fire departments, were called to the scene to contain and control the spill cleanup efforts. The agencies contacted a private environmental cleanup company to work alongside the Gloucester County Emergency Management teams. It is unclear what steps will be necessary to clean up the damage.
