What Happened on Gum Tree Road?
Reports indicate that the crash took place at 2:12pm. Both vehicles were traveling downhill on Gum Tree Road. That is when a 2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee traveling eastbound started to skid while descending the hill. It crossed over into the westbound lane and struck a 2002 Chevrolet Astro van head-on. The angle of the crash caused both drivers to spin out of control. The Jeep ended up in a ditch before it struck a fence. The van spun and struck a metal guardrail on the westbound shoulder. The person driving the van was mechanically extricated and taken to the Paoli Hospital, but later lost their life.
Two passengers in the van were taken to Christiana Hospital, one with serious injuries. The driver of the Jeep was also taken to the hospital with injuries, but it was not known how severe they were. Police are investigating to determine if speed was a factor in the accident.
