A teen was struck by a car while walking near the intersection of Main Street and Smithworks Blvd in Phoenixville. The incident occurred at approximately 9:15 a.m. on a Tuesday morning. Police did not provide insight into the details of the accident, but stated the 16-year-old was in stable condition at a local hospital.

Why Pedestrian Accidents Happen

There are numerous reasons pedestrians are hit by vehicles, and most of them are preventable. If someone is in a crosswalk, but the driver approaching them stops to check a text message, that is enough time for the vehicle to strike the pedestrian and cause fatal injuries. Other reasons cars hit pedestrians include lack of visibility, intoxication, and fatigue. There are many cases when speeding drivers cannot stop in time, or poor road conditions contribute.

There are instances in which pedestrians hold some or all of the fault in the accident as well. If the pedestrian ran out into the street unexpectedly and the driver did not have time to respond and avoid them, that could make it more challenging to hold the driver accountable.
