Crash on Route 42 Causes Gas Main Leak

Rescuers were called to the scene of an accident in Gloucester Township at around 8:15 p.m. on a Tuesday evening. Upon arrival, they found that a vehicle had struck the Route 42 overpass, causing a gas leak. The driver was trapped in the vehicle at the time. Teams worked to free the driver, who was then taken to an area hospital.

According to the initial investigation from the Serious Crash Investigation Team, the vehicle left the roadway for an unknown reason. It then hit several street signs before colliding with the concrete footing for the State Highway 42 overpass. The car continued forward, scraping the overpass for its full length. It then struck a South Jersey Gas mainline, causing a gas leak. No update was provided regarding the driver’s condition at the time of the accident.

Leaving the Roadway Is a Common Factor in Serious Accidents

Today’s drivers are focused on numerous things while behind the wheel, and that often leads to a serious risk of injuries when their vehicle leaves the roadway. Some may overcorrect after checking a text message and swerve too far. Others may swerve as they try to avoid striking an animal. Medical emergencies can also cause an accident like this to happen, as can vehicle breakdowns.
