Bike Rider Struck by Car and Killed in West Philadelphia

A bike rider lost their life after being struck by a car in West Philadelphia on an early Saturday morning, according to police. The driver fled the scene of the accident.

Police believe that a red SUV, potentially a Jeep Cherokee, was traveling westbound on Lancaster Avenue at the time of the collision with the bike rider, who was also traveling westbound.

The bicyclist had just started making a left turn onto North 56th Street when the SUV struck them. The driver appeared to swerve but then continued westbound on Lancaster Avenue without stopping.

The bike rider was taken to Lankenau Hospital. They died about an hour later at the hospital. Police are looking for the at-fault SUV driver.

Intersection Accidents Are Common and Tragic

For bike riders, turning at intersections is one of the most dangerous tasks on their route. It is very common for drivers not paying attention to miss the bike rider who may have the right of way. Distraction, fatigue, or daydreaming are common causes of this.  There are times when the bike rider could be at fault, such as if the driver had the right of way and the bike rider misjudged the speed of the vehicle.
