An accident occurring in Egg Harbor Township on a Sunday morning led to charges for one person. According to police, the accident happened just before 6 a.m.
That is when officers from the EHT Police Department were called to the Black Horse Pike and Venice Avenue intersection for a call reporting a car crashing into a utility pole. The 2007 Honda Civic struck the pole for unknown reasons. The driver got out of the car and fled the scene on foot. The passenger in the car was in a semi-conscious state with serious injuries.
To evade the police, the driver jumped into the back of a pickup truck that had slowed down to check out the accident. They then tried to hide in the bed of the truck. They also attempted to steal several tools from the bed of the truck at the time.
Police were able to locate the driver and took them into custody. The driver needed treatment for injuries and was taken to the AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center-City Division for treatment. The passenger was also taken to the same hospital. Police charged the driver with assault by auto, burglary of a vehicle, hindering apprehension, DWI, and numerous other motor vehicle violations.
