A collision involving a tractor-trailer and a vehicle occurred in the southbound lanes of Interstate 476 in Radnor Township at around 11 a.m. on a Thursday morning. The accident involved a vehicle that was trapped under the side of the tractor-trailer vehicle. Images of the accident taken by news drones showed a green sedan wedged under the side of the Walmart tractor-trailer.
According to the limited information provided by police, the driver of the sedan had to be pulled out of the car and was taken to the hospital with a significant head injury. There was no update on that driver’s condition, but no other parties were hurt.
Police closed down the roadway for some time to investigate and worked to clear the scene. The collision caused traffic to back up in Delaware County for some time.
Why Tractor-Trailer Side Impact Is Dangerous
Collisions involving the sides of tractor-trailers are not uncommon. When a sedan strikes another sedan in a side-impact accident, the collision results in the vehicles coming to a complete stop. In a tractor-trailer accident, a small sedan like this can not just strike the truck, but continue to travel under the vehicle, often right in front of the tires. Because there’s nothing to stop them, this can cause serious risk of injury and loss of life.
