News out of Trevose, Pennsylvania, indicates that a tanker truck driver lost their life when they lost control of the vehicle, causing it to overturn off the ramp at Interstate 276 EB to Route 1. The incident happened at 1 a.m. on a Monday morning.
News helicopters were able to capture images of the tractor-trailer on its side on the embankment near the ramp. The truck driver was trapped within the vehicle, and once rescuers got to them, they were deceased.
Crews shut down the ramp for several hours to work on the removal of the truck and to investigate the case. It is unclear what caused the accident to occur in the first place.
Why Trucks Overturn
Winter weather makes all of the ramps and roadway conditions harder to manage for most people, including truck drivers. Trucks have a much higher center of gravity. Turns along ramps like this can cause the vehicle to topple over if the driver operates in an unsafe manner, such as taking the turn too tightly or at a fast rate. Other times, cargo on the truck could dislodge, causing too much weight to shift, leading to the rollover. Road conditions could also be a factor if there is ice or damage present.
