Sleeping Driver Causes Car Accident on 476

A serious accident occurred on Route 476 in South Whitehall at approximately 10:15 p.m. on a recent evening. According to Pennsylvania State Police, one of the involved drivers was operating in the northbound lane. That driver was speeding and fatigued, and police believe the driver fell asleep behind the wheel.

That led to the vehicle striking the rear of an SUV, causing the SUV to veer off the side of the road and then strike the embankment. It then crossed both northbound lanes and hit the center barrier in the roadway. Ultimately, the SUV was facing west after it came to a stop, blocking both lanes of traffic.

The passenger in the SUV was ejected from the vehicle and suffered serious injuries. The driver of the SUV was treated for minor injuries. The driver of the car also suffered serious injuries, though they did not appear to be life-threatening. The driver of the car was charged with careless driving.
