What You Should Know About NAION Lawsuits Related to GLP-1 Use

People taking glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) medications for diabetes or weight loss have experienced a significantly higher rate of the development of non-arteric ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION). This condition can cause changes to vision, including the sudden onset of loss of vision in one eye. A recent study from Harvard Medical School & Mass General Brigham has found that 9% of diabetic patients taking Semaglutide developed NAION. In a comparison study, just 1.8% of those not taking GLP-1s developed NAION. That is four times as many.

Because of this and other studies, victims have taken action against the manufacturers of these drugs, including Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly. These two manufacturers produced GLP-1s under brand names such as:

  • Trulicity
  • Ozempic
  • Wegovy
  • Saxenda
  • Mounjaro
  • Rylesus
  • Zepbound
  • Victoza

If you believe you are also suffering from NAION as a result of taking one of these medications, reach out to a product liability attorney at our firm. It is critical that you act quickly so that you can be a part of the current lawsuits (or others) that may develop.

What Lawsuits Are Pending?

There are currently over 1800 lawsuits filed against Ozempic for NAION and other types of injuries resulting from taking the medication. Other drug manufacturers are also facing the same types of actions as a result.

The key to remember here is that these are complex cases because numerous people have now filed lawsuits against the company. Because so many people have filed lawsuits, the courts have created an MDL, or multidistrict litigation. This means that several lawsuits that have been filed in various districts across the country have now been consolidated to allow a single court to hear complaints and make decisions.

As of May 2025, MDL No. 3094—Eastern District of Pennsylvania has been created to consolidate all claims related to Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, and Rybelsus. The claims stem from patients who took the drugs and experienced serious gastrointestinal discomfort and vision-related side effects.

The lawsuits claim that the manufacturer failed to warn about the serious risk and, therefore, should be responsible for the losses suffered by those patients. The court has not ruled on this yet. The case is currently being navigated. You can still join this litigation if you qualify. To do so, contact our product liability attorney at Kwartler Manus.

What Could Happen if You Join a NAION Lawsuit for GLP-1s?

While the courts gather evidence and hear testimony, victims have to go on with their lives, unable to see the face of their loved one or navigate the tasks they take on every day, the way they have. As a result, you are suffering. If your product liability attorney can prove that you are suffering due to the lack of warning from the manufacturer, then we can hold them accountable for the losses you have.

There is no estimated timeline for reaching a decision just yet, and no dollar amount has been promised to any victim. The court is still navigating these decisions. However, for people who are facing blindness due to a diagnosis of NAION after taking GLP-1s, the potential for a high-dollar recovery is there. It is critical that you join this lawsuit or work with our legal team to ensure your voice is heard.
