How is a Delivery Driver Compensated Following an Accident?

Driving for a food delivery service is a great way to make some extra money, and in recent months quarantine has forced many to look to these services rather than go out themselves. Becoming a driver for a delivery service is also convenient if you already own a vehicle that you can use to make the deliveries.

Exposure to Danger

It is important to remember, though, that spending as much time driving as most delivery workers does expose you to the dangers of the road more often. There is an increased risk of getting into an automobile accident the longer you drive. Because of this, you need to know what happens after you get into an accident, including how you are compensated.

Unfortunately, since most delivery companies do not provide you with accident insurance, you will have to look at your personal insurance policy to see when you will be covered and when you pay for damages out of pocket. Insurance policies can often be tricky to navigate, and knowing whether or not you will be covered in the event of an accident depends entirely on the policy that you have. Getting the right policy, though, it can save you a lot of money if you do happen to get into a car crash while making a delivery.

If you think that you want to start working for a food delivery service, talk to your insurance provider about what coverage you might need to protect yourself and your vehicle should you get into an accident while on the job. Often, using your vehicle for your job in this capacity requires a different insurance policy than your standard auto one. Your insurance provider should be able to help you find the right plan so that you are covered.

Occupational Accident Insurance from Caviar

Sometimes, though, coverage for accidents that occur on deliveries can be covered by the company you work for. For instance, Caviar has its Occupational Accident Insurance that was implemented in 2018. Medical expenses for the driver are covered under this policy, and should the driver need to go on disability, they can be compensated up to 50% of their average pay. In addition, the death of a driver can result in a compensation of $100,000 to the family and benefits for any dependents.

You do have to be careful with any policies that the company you work for may have, though, as they may only cover active deliveries, meaning that you have to have the food with you at the time of the accident to qualify. At times, the company may also cover only third parties that were involved in the crash.
