Seizure after vaping

How is Vaping Linked to Seizures?

Vape use has become popular in recent years among cigarette smokers to help curb their habit. JUUL and other e-cigarettes have been marketed as safer alternatives to traditional cigarettes, but studies show they can cause many of the same side effects, including seizures.

Seizures are a well-known result of nicotine toxicity, and vapes are likely more prone to causing it. According to the American Academy of Family Physicians, a standard 5% JUUL pod contains approximately the same amount of nicotine as a pack of cigarettes and more than twice as much nicotine concentrate as other brands of vape cartridges. This is especially concerning in regard to young consumers - the journal Pediatrics conducted a study in 2019 which found that 40% of teens didn’t even realize the fluids in vape pens contain nicotine. Additionally, inhaling from an e-cigarette does not cause the same irritating feeling in the lungs as inhaling a traditional cigarette - young people may consume much more since it is less unpleasant.

Liability Claims against JUUL and other Major E-Cigarette Manufacturing Companies

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) began investigating reports of seizures relating to vaping in April 2019, most of them involving teens and young adults. There were also several lawsuits, including one from the parents of a 15-year-old girl who suffered seizures and became addicted to JUUL after using their e-cigarettes. There is an additional lawsuit currently being filed against JUUL, which demonstrated that the company intentionally chose marketing images that targeted youth, advertised products on websites specifically for children, and shipped their product to underage customers that purchased them directly online.
